KORAK, SON OF TARZAN
DC Issue #58, August 1974

Cover: Joe Kubert

1. Korak: Cave of Darkness
Writer: Joe Kubert
Artist: Rudy Florese
Pages: 11
Characters: Korak

Synopsis: When the "gods of fate" drive Korak's tiny raft onto the shores of a strange land, the son of Tarzan is greeted by several giant insects on the beach. He uses the spar of his boat to club the bugs senseless, and then proceeds into the jungle before they revive. He comes upon a tribal ceremony and can understand the language because it is similar to Waziri. They are planning to sacrifice a young lady to a "god of night." Korak defies them and marches into the jungle to find this mysterious god. On the way he has to battle a giant lizard. Entering a deep dark cave, he finally comes upon the god, which is a giant "bat-man." When it attacks him, he manages to blind it momentarily by striking flint in its face. He thens throws his weight upon it, knocking it down and driving stalagmites through its heart. He drags the corpse back to the tribal ceremony and ends their human sacrifice practices.

Remarks: Florese's art is good but not up to the level of Alex Nino, who had drawn several episodes of Korak while Korak was appearing as a back-up feature in Tarzan during 1974, a period when the Korak comic had been temporarily cancelled.

2. Korak: The Deadly Motion Picture
Artist: Russ Manning
Pages: 7
Characters: Korak, Anne, Mike Machado

Synopsis: Korak rescues Anne from raging hippos, and filming continues. The next day Anne is filmed riding her boat down white water rapids, and then she is filmed going into a dark river cave. Long vines turn out to be man-eating plants and Korak is also enwrapped trying to save her.

Remarks: In part two of this re-formatted newspaper comic strip reprint, Manning depicts an extremely grisly scene of bones projecting out of a grotesque pink mouth on the carnivorous plant.

3. The Ape Vine (letters page; Krenkel art missing)

Inside back cover: The Insult that Made a Man Out of Mac
